Mentor Information

Dear FuelEd Students and Guardians,

I am very pleased to see that many more people have found their way into the classes and classwork this week. While we faced some significant challenges accessing the website on both Tuesday and Thursday, many of the technical issues we faced last week are working out. We will continue to solve issues as they arise, so keep me in the loop!

I've got some answers to FAQs from this week attached to this email as well as several resources attached. Please read through the whole email, and send me any questions you have in a SEPARATE email with a NEW SUBJECT LINE. That helps make sure I don't miss people.

Though the last 2 weeks have felt pretty long, we are VERY EARLY in the semester. The messages I'm receiving from the FuelEd teachers is DO NOT WORRY about low grades at this point. It will take a few weeks to build up the points buffer to offset the challenging start that we've had, but the teachers seem confident that you will recover your grades and catch up on work as we move forward.

1. Mailing List - If you would like another email added to my list, or if you or your child are not enrolled in FuelEd please send me an email requesting the change.

2. Guardian Accounts - Guardians who want detailed information on their child's progress should look at their child's account together. The guardian accounts DO NOT provide detailed progress reports, so you'll need to look in the student account to get details.

3. Pacing Guides - Here's a Google Drive folder with all the Pacing Guides I've collected so far. Please let me know if any are missing. Deep thanks to the many. parents who sent these my way so that we could all access the materials.

4. Sample FuelEd Work Schedules - Many families are working hard to organize their new learning structures at home. I've attached 3 sample work schedules for you to review, adapt, and apply in your home to best meet your needs.

6. District Resource Page for FuelEd - https://www.mssd14.org/cms/One.aspx?portalId=57448&pageId=28494188

7. iPad Accessibility - We are all working on a daily basis to improve the iPad access to FuelEd and its associated programs. Please continue to inform me as links and programs don't work, so that our team can keep moving forward. Also, if you find any work-arounds that are successful, please share them with me so that I can pass them on.

Okay- I think that pretty much catches us up with the most recent questions and needs. This transition continues to present great learning opportunities for maintaining generosity and flexibility in the face of challenge. Please continue to take care of yourselves, focus on celebrating the little victories, and work towards a rhythm of online work, downtime, family activities, and more that supports your success.

Respectfully,
Mr. Barak

Hello, MSES FuelED Families!

Again, there are several important messages to review, so please take time to read at least the beginning of this email! 😉

Online READING and MATH iReady assessments, 2nd - 5th Graders only. Due by October 5th
IReady is our district's new diagnostic for assessing student growth in Reading and Math. The testing platform responds to the student's answers, so will level up or down according to their skills. That may take longer for some students, but I would plan on between 30 to 50 minutes. There are built-in brain breaks, and students can log out and log back in to finish the test later. MSES FuelED students will take it twice this year, Fall and Spring. Look for a separate email from MSES with the testing directions and your child's individual login.

In-Person CogAT Testing for 3rd Grade MSES FUELED students: October 14th from 10am to 12pm
This is a district required ability screener, normally given in the Spring of 2nd Grade. Third Grade students will come to MSES for the testing when Hybrid students are not here. The session should last approximately 120 minutes from arrival to dismissal, and includes two breaks. We will safely seat students in a well-ventilated area, wear masks, and keep materials individualized. Please contact Principal Maria Masone ([email protected]) with any concerns.

October Count
All students must be actively engaging in all content courses on the K12 online system in order to be considered enrolled for the state's student count on October 1st (THIS THURSDAY). It is our desire to work with families in this online schooling process, and are available to support you as needed. Families who are not able to access the full online educational experience will be contacted by a district representative for next steps.

K12 LEARNING COACH ACCOUNTS
* Progress vs. Performance: Please be monitoring your child's success on assignments. It is easy to complete many tasks each day, but tougher to show an 80% or higher score on scored assignments. There are opportunities to RE-DO quizzes, so please take advantage of those multiple attempts. If you notice a continued struggle with certain skills, please contact your online instructor ASAP for support. This includes extending the number of attempts, but only after getting some help with instruction.
* Take attendance (it keeps your child's account from being put on alert for too little time spent on coursework)
* Check Daily and Weekly Plan (it aids in planning out the day and week, and preparing materials if necessary)
* Click links for courses (to access tools, objectives, or see completion status for each assignment in each course)
* Use email system (to communicate easily with the online instructor or Class Connect teacher)
