The Manitou Springs School District will be asking voters to consider a bond proposal in November of 2025. This bond will fund essential upgrades to our schools, including replacing outdated systems, creating modern learning spaces, and ensuring ADA compliance for greater accessibility. Additionally, the bond will enhance safety measures to protect our students, staff, and visitors. These improvements are critical to maintaining a high-quality learning environment and ensuring our schools meet the needs of every student and family.
Why now and why does this matter?
The average age of the facilities in the proposed bond is 60 years old. By addressing critical needs, we are ensuring the longevity and viability of our campus facilities. MSSD14 is dedicated to providing safe, modern, accessible and high quality spaces that support student success.
What’s Included?
Safety & Security - Investing in school safety and security is an urgent need to ensure our buildings are prepared, our systems are up to date, and our students and staff can focus on learning in a protected environment.
Accessibility - The bond will fund critical accessibility upgrades across the district, including ADA-compliant entrances, restrooms, and classroom features to ensure all students can learn in safe, inclusive environments.
Mechanical & Equipment - Bond funding allows the district to upgrade aging mechanical systems and equipment—like HVAC and electrical infrastructure—to prevent costly breakdowns, improve efficiency, and keep schools safe and fully operational without diverting funds from classrooms.
Learning Spaces - Investing in updating learning spaces is crucial to provide students with modern, flexible environments that support collaboration, creativity, and effective learning.
Community Impact
Property Value Impact:
-
A study by the National Bureau of Economic Research found that for every $1 spent on school capital projects, home values increased by approximately $1.50, demonstrating a direct return on investment for homeowners.
Local Economic Stimulus:
-
The American Institute of Architects reports that school construction projects typically retain 70-80% of expenditures within the local economy through employment, materials, and services.
Long-Term Financial Perspective:
-
The National Council on School Facilities reports that deferred maintenance typically increases repair costs by 4-15% annually. Addressing infrastructure needs proactively through bonds ultimately costs less than emergency repairs.
-
Bond financing allows for intergenerational equity – those who benefit from the facilities help pay for them over time, rather than placing the entire financial burden on current residents.
