State Assessments
State Assessment Overview (Grades 3–11)
Each spring, students in grades 3–11 participate in Colorado state assessments, as required by state and federal law. These assessments measure how well students are meeting the Colorado Academic Standards in English language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. The tests focus on skills such as reading comprehension, writing, problem-solving, and applying knowledge—not on memorization alone. Results help teachers, schools, and families understand student progress and inform instruction, but they are only one of many measures used to support student learning.
Colorado law allows families to opt their child out of state assessments. Families who wish to opt out must follow district procedures, which typically include submitting a written request to the school. Students who opt out may be provided an alternative learning activity during testing sessions. Schools remain responsible for supervising students during testing, and opting out does not result in academic penalties.
This FAQ provides information about what each assessment includes, testing schedules, accommodations, opt-out procedures, and how results are used, so families can make informed decisions and support their child throughout the testing process.
