Internet Safety Concerns

Questions and Concerns about internet safety

MSSD14 is committed to continual improvement in this area which remains a priority as the internet grows and tools to help mitigate safety concerns evolve.

At MSSD14, student safety is a top priority, and our web filtering system plays a key role in maintaining a secure online environment. In 2021, we upgraded our infrastructure by installing a new firewall, and our current web filter, LineWize, is widely used by school districts across Colorado and the nation.

Our web filter is highly restrictive, blocking categories such as abused drugs, adult content, alcohol, tobacco, copyright infringement, dating, games, gambling, hacking, malware, nudity, phishing, sex education, social media, swimsuits, intimate apparel, and weapons. Specifically:

  • YouTube: Blocked at MSES, UPES, and MSMS, but accessible to high school students.
  • Search Engines: Google is permitted, while Yahoo is not available.
  • Social Media: We aim to block all social media platforms.

While our filter is robust, no system is infallible. Even the most advanced filters, whether at school or at home, may sometimes fail to block inappropriate content or inadvertently restrict appropriate sites.

This is why internet safety is not solely a technology issue. It requires a shared effort:

  • Teachers actively manage classrooms and use engaging instructional practices.
  • Students must understand their responsibilities and practice good digital citizenship.
  • Parents can support by setting boundaries and having regular conversations about technology use.
  • Everyone has a role in staying informed about the latest technology trends and research.

Together, we can foster a safe, responsible, and informed approach to technology use for our students.
